Box Score 2 ATHENS, W. Va. — Davis & Elkins softball split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Concord on Saturday afternoon at CU Softball Field. The Mountain Lions claimed the opener 2-0 before the Senators responded with a 2-1 extra-inning victory in game two.
Game One: Concord 2, Davis & Elkins 0
Concord capitalized on a pair of Davis & Elkins errors to secure a 2-0 win in the opening game of the doubleheader.
The Mountain Lions struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Kendall Morgan scored on a fielding error, giving Concord an early 1-0 advantage. Concord added another run in the third inning as Madison Hollis doubled down the right field line to drive in Morgan and extend the lead to 2-0.
Davis & Elkins recorded six hits in the contest but was unable to push a run across the plate. Sammie Jarvis led the Senators at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance, while Gweny Wessling, Ashlyn Zapach, Lorena Ruiz-Rubio and Trinity Fleming each added a hit.
Jarvis turned in a strong effort in the circle despite taking the loss, allowing just three hits and two runs — both unearned — while striking out five over six innings of work.
Game Two: Davis & Elkins 2, Concord 1 (8 Innings)
The Senators bounced back in game two, using a late rally and a walk-off home run in extra innings to earn a 2-1 victory.
Concord opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Kristy McCord, giving the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead.
Davis & Elkins broke through in the sixth inning when Alyssa Haynes delivered an RBI single that scored Cayden Warfield to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained deadlocked until the top of the eighth inning when Lorena Ruiz-Rubio launched a solo home run to left-center field, putting the Senators ahead 2-1.
Saylor Kneeland earned the win for Davis & Elkins, tossing a complete-game eight innings while allowing just one run on six hits with three strikeouts.
Ruiz-Rubio finished with the game-winning home run, while April Belcher, Ashlyn Zapach, Alyssa Haynes and Trinity Fleming each recorded hits for the Senators.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Sunday, March 29, traveling to Glenville, W. Va. for a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Glenville State. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., with game two set for 3:00 p.m.
