Gutierrez and Troncoso Make History, Qualify for ITA Division II National Championships

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Davis & Elkins College men's tennis made program history at the 2026 ITA Division II Men's and Women's Atlantic Regional Championships, as Maurizio Gutierrez and Julio Troncoso became the first men's doubles team in program history to qualify for the ITA Division II National Championships.

Gutierrez and Troncoso delivered an impressive run through the men's doubles draw, advancing to the championship match after defeating their opponents in the semifinal round. The Senators won their semifinal matchup against fourth-seeded Kensei Konishi and Batsomi Marobela, from the University of Charleston to secure their place in the final.

The duo ultimately fell in the championship match, but their run marked a historic accomplishment for the Davis & Elkins tennis program with their qualification for the national championships.

The Senators also competed across the men's and women's singles draws, with several athletes facing nationally ranked and regionally seeded opponents.

In men's singles, Sou Okada opened the tournament with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory over Bloomsburg's Jack Seaborn before facing 10th-seeded Matteo Bruscaglioni in the next round.

Maurizio Gutierrez also advanced beyond his opening match, defeating Edinboro's Philipp Paulus of Edinboro University before continuing in the singles draw. Second-seeded Philipp Fedorczuk represented D&E among the top seeds in the tournament playing all the way to round 16, while Anish Ranjalkar, Julio Troncoso, Asier Perez Lopez and Shounak Chatterjee also competed in the men's singles field.

Ranjalkar faced Gabriel Carrillo Amengual of Frostburg State, while Troncoso matched up against Oscar Tomas of West Virginia State. Perez Lopez competed against ninth-seeded Stefans Audrins, and Chatterjee faced 16th-seeded Hugo Poulain.

In the women's singles draw, Saumya Chatterjee and Chloe Vu represented the Senators against tough regional competition. Chatterjee faced top-seeded Lea Von Kozierowski of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, while Vu took on Bloomsburg's Lourdes Vallejo.

Davis & Elkins also competed in the men's doubles draw with multiple pairings. Fedorczuk and Ranjalkar, seeded fifth, advanced through the early rounds before their run ended in the quarterfinals. Okada and Perez Lopez also competed, along with Troncoso and Gutierrez, who ultimately made the deepest run of any Senators pairing.

In women's doubles, Vu and Chatterjee advanced to the championship match. The D&E pairing finished as runners-up after falling to Fairmont State's Stephanie Gopar and Alara Juelide Akgul, 8-5.

The ITA Division II Atlantic Regional Championships brought together top Division II programs from across the region. For Davis & Elkins, the tournament will be remembered for Gutierrez and Troncoso's historic achievement and their qualification for the national stage.
