CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins College dropped both games of a Mountain East Conference softball doubleheader to the University of Charleston on Friday at Watt Powell Annex, falling 2-1 in a walk-off in Game 1 before being shut out 2-0 in the nightcap.
In the opener, senior Jules Gutierrez gave the Senators (15-23, 8-7 MEC) a late lead with a solo home run to left in the top of the seventh — her third long ball of the season. Sophomore pitcher Sammie Jarvis held the Golden Eagles scoreless through six innings, but UC rallied for two runs in their final at-bat. Taylor Hodson delivered the game-winning hit with a pinch-hit RBI double.
Jarvis went 6.2 innings in the loss, allowing four hits and one earned run.
Game 2 saw UC dominate in the circle, tossing a complete-game one-hitter with one strikeout and five walks. Senior Lina Gutierrez led off with a single in the first, but it was the only hit for the Senators as the Golden Eagles pitcher retired 19 of the next 20 batters.
UC (19-11) broke through in the fifth with an unearned run and added insurance in the sixth on a pinch-hit solo homer.
D&E starter Saylor Kneeland pitched well in defeat, scattering nine hits over six innings while striking out three and walking one.
