BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball continued its conference campaign in commanding fashion, sweeping West Virginia Wesleyan in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Senators used a late comeback to take game one, 6-5, before cruising to a 9-0 shutout in the nightcap at Culpepper Field.
Game One: Senators Rally Late for 6-5 Win
Trailing 5-1 entering the fifth inning, Davis & Elkins stormed back with a four-run frame to tie the contest before plating the go-ahead run in the sixth. Ashlyn Zapach provided the biggest swing, launching a three-run homer to left to even the score. Zapach finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Linzey Allard added a solo homer in the first inning, and Lilly Saucedo delivered a multi-hit effort with an RBI. The Senators collected eight hits overall and stole three bases in a well-rounded offensive performance.
Sammie Jarvis went the distance in the circle, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out four. She held the Bobcats scoreless over the final three innings and stranded seven runners.
Wesleyan jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first, but could not hold off the D&E comeback.
Game Two: Kneeland Tosses Shutout in 9-0 Rout
Davis & Elkins wasted no time in the second game, scoring eight runs over the first two innings and never looking back. The Senators capitalized on four Wesleyan errors and five walks while collecting seven hits in a five-inning victory.
Senior Saylor Kneeland was nearly untouchable in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just three hits with no walks or strikeouts. She faced just 16 batters and needed only 42 pitches in the win.
Cortney Dobbs went 1-for-2 with a two-run double, two walks, and a stolen base to pace the offense. Allard and Saucedo each drove in two runs, while Zapach and Alyssa Haynes added RBIs to complete the effort.
The Senators were flawless in the field, turning in a clean defensive performance with 11 assists and 15 putouts.
