ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins swept a doubleheader from West Virginia State on Friday afternoon at Joni Smith Field, using a late rally in game one and a dominant performance in game two to celebrate Senior Day in front of a large and lively crowd.
In the opener, the Senators overcame an early 6-2 deficit to earn an 8-6 win behind a three-run third and another three-run burst in the sixth inning. Freshman Cortney Dobbs provided the go-ahead blast with a solo home run to left field, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Lina Gutierrez drove in two runs from the top of the lineup, and Alyssa Haynes added an RBI and scored once. Saylor Kneeland earned the win in the circle, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing just one run on eight hits.
Game two was all D&E from the start, as the Senators blanked the Yellow Jackets 10-0 in five innings. Sophomore right-hander Sammie Jarvis spun a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts and just two walks to notch her ninth win of the season. The D&E offense exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning and collected 12 hits overall.
Haynes and Ashlyn Zapach each tallied two hits and two runs scored, while Jules Gutierrez delivered a bases-clearing double to highlight the fourth-inning outburst and finished with three RBIs. Dobbs doubled and drove in a run, and Lorena Ruiz-Rubio and Audrey Higgins each chipped in two hits and one RBI.
With the sweep, Davis & Elkins improves to 24-25 overall and 17-9 in Mountain East Conference play. The Senators return to action Friday to take on MEC South Division-leaders Glenville State in a road doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
