Late Comeback Falls Short as Softball Drops Two to Charleston

ELKINS, W.Va. — Lina Gutierrez delivered a standout performance with six RBIs in Game 2, but Davis & Elkins College dropped both ends of a Mountain East Conference softball doubleheader to the University of Charleston on Thursday at Joni Smith Field.

The Senators were limited to one hit in a 3-0 loss in the opener. Junior Alyssa Haynes recorded the lone hit with a leadoff line drive single in the fourth inning. Cortney Dobbs reached base twice via walks, and Lorena Ruiz-Rubio was hit by a pitch in the fifth. Sammie Jarvis pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing just five hits over 7 innings.

In the nightcap, Gutierrez led an offensive surge with a 3-for-5 performance, including a game-tying grand slam and a two-run double to account for six of the team's seven runs. The senior center fielder has now tallied 29 RBIs on the year.

The Senators (22-25, 15-9 MEC) collected 11 hits in Game 2. Freshman shortstop Audrey Higgins went 2-for-4 with a double, and Haynes added another extra-base hit. Ruiz-Rubio reached base twice and Jules Gutierrez scored a run.

Saylor Kneeland made the start in Game 2, while Dawn Morris and Alyssia Munoz provided relief. The Senators tied the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning after the Gutierrez grand slam before Charleston pulled away with a four-run eighth to secure the sweep.
