ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College softball powered past Point Park, 9-1, in five innings on Monday afternoon in a rescheduled contest from a March 30 rainout. The win pushed the Senators to 22-23 on the season and 15-7 in Mountain East Conference play with their seventh straight victory.
The Senators jumped out to a fast start with three runs in the opening frame and never looked back. This week's MEC Player of the Week Ashlyn Zapach led the charge at the plate once again, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run homer and a double. Jules Gutierrez also delivered a big swing, launching a solo home run in the fifth and finishing with two RBIs on the day.
Lina Gutierrez sparked the offense with a 3-for-3 effort at the top of the lineup and scored twice. Cortney Dobbs and Alyssa Haynes each added a hit, while Lorena Ruiz-Rubio chipped in an RBI single and Madison Smith drove in the game-winner during the five-run fifth inning that sealed the run-rule victory.
Sammie Jarvis tossed a gem in the circle, holding the Pioneers to just one hit over five innings. The sophomore struck out three and allowed one unearned run while improving to 10-2 on the season.
The win also marked a continuation of strong home play for the Senators, who have now won eight of their last 10 games at Joni Smith Field.
