WHEELING, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins used dominant pitching and an explosive offense to sweep Wheeling in a Mountain East Conference softball doubleheader Sunday at JB Chambers I-470 Complex. The Senators rolled to an 11-0 run-rule win in the opener and followed with a 16-3 rout in Game 2, extending their winning streak to six games.
In Game 1, Sammie Jarvis tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out seven over five innings to improve to 9-11 on the year. The right-hander faced just three batters over the minimum in the run-rule victory.
The Senators (21-23, 14-7 MEC) pounded out 16 hits, with Ashlyn Zapach driving in four runs on three hits, including a home run. Courtney Dobbs also homered as part of a 3-for-3 effort with two RBIs and three runs. Linzey Allard roped three doubles and drove in two, while Audrey Higgins and Jules Gutierrez each added RBIs.
D&E scored four in the first inning and didn't let up, adding three runs in both the second and third to chase Wheeling starter Kaylin Shiel without recording an out.
In the nightcap, the Senators erupted again for 16 runs on 16 hits, scoring in five of seven innings. Jules Gutierrez led the way with three hits, including a double, two RBIs, and three runs. Lina Gutierrez went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Meg Henkle delivered four RBIs on two hits.
Saylor Kneeland (10-2) earned the win with a complete-game effort, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. She induced 14 groundouts in a steady performance.
D&E broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning and tacked on nine more over the final two frames. The Senators drew nine walks in the contest and took advantage of two Wheeling errors.
