ELKINS, W. Va. – Davis & Elkins College is deeply saddened to announce the passing of esteemed alumnus Hank Steinbrecher, a 1971 graduate and integral member of the 1970 NAIA National Championship soccer team. Steinbrecher, who passed away on March 25, 2025, at the age of 77, leaves behind a monumental legacy in the world of American soccer.
During his tenure at Davis & Elkins College, Steinbrecher's dedication and prowess on the soccer field were instrumental in securing the 1970 national title. His contributions to the team were celebrated with his induction into the College's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992.
Following his collegiate success, Steinbrecher embarked on a transformative career in soccer administration. Appointed as Secretary General of the U.S. Soccer Federation in 1990, he played a pivotal role in elevating the sport's prominence across the nation. His leadership was crucial in organizing landmark events such as the 1994 FIFA World Cup, the 1996 Summer Olympics Soccer Tournament, and the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup. Under his guidance, the U.S. Women's National Team clinched two World Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal, solidifying the country's position on the global soccer stage.
Reflecting on their time as teammates and colleagues, Bill Nuttall, a fellow Davis & Elkins alumnus and longtime benefactor, remarked, "I was the goalkeeper, and Hank was my hard-nosed left back." Nuttall highlighted Steinbrecher's intellectual depth, noting, "He loved English literature. A smart guy, very intelligent, very well-read. You could tell that by his speeches." He further added, "Hank was absolutely the perfect choice because he started communicating with everybody. He just hit the ground running."
Steinbrecher's enduring impact on American soccer was recognized with his induction into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2005. His visionary leadership and unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on the sport, inspiring countless individuals and shaping the future of soccer in the United States.
