Softball Sweeps Concord in Home Opener Behind Allard’s Heroics

ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins softball opened its home slate in thrilling fashion Friday afternoon at Joni Smith Field, sweeping a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Concord with 13-9 and 10-7 victories in front of a solid crowd.

Senior Linzey Allard stole the show with a historic performance, belting three home runs on the day, including a dramatic walk-off three-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 to cap the sweep.

Game 1: CU 9, D&E 13

In the opener, the D&E offense erupted for 13 runs on 15 hits, highlighted by a pair of home runs and six RBIs from senior Linzey Allard. Lina Gutierrez was a spark at the top of the lineup, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Cortney Dobbs added three hits, including a double, while Jules Gutierrez drove in a pair with a double of her own. Alyssa Haynes and Lilly Saucedo each contributed a hit and a run scored as the Senators powered their way to the Game 1 victory.

On the mound, Sammie Jarvis earned the win for the Senators with a solid 4.1-inning start, striking out six while allowing four runs on five hits. Alyssia Munoz briefly entered in relief but was tagged for four runs without recording an out. Dawn Morris stepped in to steady things, tossing 2.2 innings and surrendering just one run on five hits to close out the 13-9 victory.

Game 2: CU 7, D&E 10

Game 2 proved to be a back-and-forth battle. Linzey Allard capped her remarkable day with her third home run—a walk-off three-run blast with two outs in the bottom of the seventh—finishing 2-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Ashlyn Zapach came through with a pair of hits and three RBIs, while Cortney Dobbs added two hits, two runs, and an RBI. Lina Gutierrez reached base four times and scored twice. Alyssa Haynes and Lilly Saucedo each chipped in with two-hit performances and combined for three RBIs, helping D&E seal the 10-7 win.

Saylor Kneeland earned the win in Game 2, pitching 5.1 gritty innings despite allowing seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out five. The freshman battled through traffic on the basepaths but kept D&E within striking distance.
