ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball picked up a dominant doubleheader sweep over Glenville State on Sunday afternoon, taking Game 1 in convincing fashion, 19-0 in five innings, before completing the sweep with a thrilling 6-5 victory in Game 2 at Joni Smith Field.
Game 1: Davis & Elkins 19, Glenville State 0 (5 innings)
The offense came out blazing with five runs in the first inning and an incredible 10-run outburst in the second. Eight different Senators recorded hits, and six registered multi-hit games. Senior Linzey Allard continued her weekend tear, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBIs, and a stolen base.
Junior Alyssa Haynes highlighted the offensive onslaught with a grand slam and a game-high five RBIs, while Ashlyn Zapach was a force in the middle of the order with a 3-for-4 day that included two doubles and four RBIs.
On the mound, Sammie Jarvis was lights out, throwing a complete-game two-hit shutout with three strikeouts and no walks across five innings. The sophomore faced just 19 batters and benefited from a flawless defense that turned in 15 putouts and four assists without an error.
The 19-run outburst is D&E's highest-scoring performance of the season to date and sets the tone heading into the back half of MEC play.
Game 2: Davis & Elkins 6, Glenville State 5
Linzey Allard's red-hot weekend continued Sunday afternoon as the senior launched a go-ahead 2-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to lift Davis & Elkins to a 6-5 win over Glenville State, completing the doubleheader sweep.
Allard's clutch blast — her fourth of the weekend — broke a 4-4 tie and proved to be the game-winner after the Senators held Glenville State scoreless in the top of the seventh. The senior finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and continues to be a major spark plug in the heart of the D&E lineup.
D&E struck first with a run in the opening frame, but the Pioneers responded with four runs over the first four innings to take a 4-3 lead. A solo home run from Lina Gutierrez and a two-run shot by Ashlyn Zapach helped the Senators claw back, while Alyssa Haynes added an RBI double in the fifth to tie things up.
The Senators used a three-pitcher combination to secure the win. Saylor Kneeland started and went 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out two. Dawn Morris came on in relief and held Glenville to just one run over 3.0 innings of work, striking out one and walking two. With the tying run on third and two outs in the top of the seventh, Sammie Jarvis was called out of the bullpen and slammed the door shut, inducing a game-ending groundout to earn the save.
