PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College secured a 13-11 victory over Virginia State on Sunday afternoon at Philippi, W.Va., fueled by a dominant second and third quarter performance.
The Senators (3-5) jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the first quarter, but Virginia State (2-6) stayed close, trailing just 3-2 after the opening period. The second quarter saw D&E pull away, outscoring the Trojans 5-3, including power-play goals from Ke'ya Stevens and Kelsey Corcoran, sending the home team into halftime with an 8-5 advantage.
Rylee Anderson led the way offensively for D&E, tallying a game-high five goals and an assist. Anderson was particularly effective in the third quarter, scoring twice, including a man-up goal assisted by Ari Hinton. Hannah Lennon added two goals and an assist, while Emelia Johnson contributed a goal and three assists.
The Senators continued their strong play into the third quarter, outscoring Virginia State 5-1 in the frame, pushing their lead to 13-6. However, Virginia State mounted a late comeback in the fourth, scoring five unanswered goals, including two from Kayla Carroll-Willia. Despite the late push, Davis & Elkins held on for the two-goal victory.
Goalkeeper Megan Bauer anchored the defensive effort with 13 saves, while the Senators' defense forced 14 caused turnovers. Virginia State finished with 31 shots, compared to 30 for D&E.
