Softball Splits at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Davis & Elkins College softball team split a doubleheader against Frostburg State on Friday (Mar. 14), securing a 2-1 victory in the opener before falling 1-0 in a tightly contested nightcap at Bobcat Field.

Game 1: Davis & Elkins 2, Frostburg State 1

D&E (7-16) struck early, plating two runs in the first inning behind a two-run homer by Linzey Allard. The senior first baseman launched a deep shot to left field, scoring Lina Gutierrez and giving the Senators a lead they would not relinquish.

Pitcher Saylor Kneeland delivered a dominant performance in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on six hits. Kneeland (4-0) struck out five and walked four across seven innings of work.

Frostburg State (4-14) responded with a run in the bottom of the first, but Kneeland settled in, stranding nine runners over the course of the game to secure the win.

Gutierrez finished 1-for-4 with a double, while Gweny Wessling added a pair of hits, including a double.

Game 2: Frostburg State 1, Davis & Elkins 0

The nightcap turned into a pitcher's duel, with Frostburg State scratching across the game's only run in the sixth inning to secure the victory.

D&E's Sammie Jarvis (1-7) was exceptional despite taking the loss, allowing just two hits and an unearned run over six innings while striking out nine.

The Senators struggled at the plate, mustering only five hits and stranding six baserunners. Ashlyn Zapach led the team with two hits, while Cortney Dobbs added a stolen base.
