Softball Splits Doubleheader at UVA Wise

WISE, Va. – The Davis & Elkins College softball team secured a hard-fought victory in game one before dropping the second contest against UVA Wise in a doubleheader on Saturday at Cavalier Field.

Game 1: Davis & Elkins 4, UVA Wise 3

The Senators (5-16) claimed a 4-3 win in the opener, using timely hitting and strong pitching to hold off the Cavaliers.

Linzey Allard led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base. Ashlyn Zapach also recorded two hits, including a double, while driving in a run.

Saylor Kneeland (4-1) earned the win in the circle, pitching six innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out one. Dawn Morris came in to pitch the final inning, giving up one hit, striking out one, and walking one to earn the save. 

Game 2: UVA Wise 7, Davis & Elkins 5

The Senators jumped out to an early lead in game two, but a five-run fifth inning from UVA Wise proved to be the difference in a 7-5 defeat.

Allard continued her strong day at the plate, launching a solo home run and finishing 2-for-3. Jules Gutierrez contributed a two-hit, two-RBI performance, while Gweny Wessling added a two-run double.

Sammie Jarvis started the game, throwing 4.2 innings while allowing five runs on two hits with four strikeouts. Alyssia Munoz came in for relief, giving up two earned runs on five hits over 1.1 innings.

The Senators open conference play on the road on Saturday, March 15 when they visit Frostburg State for a doubleheader starting at noon in Frostburg, Maryland.
