ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College men's lacrosse team faced off against Virginia State on Saturday evening but fell short in a 17-5 loss at home.
Virginia State came out strong in the first quarter, scoring six goals while limiting Davis & Elkins to just one. The Senators got on the board late in the period when JayC Morlog found the back of the net off an assist from Xzavier Jankowiak at the 2:51 mark.
The second quarter saw the Senators add two more goals, with Matthew Smith and Chuck Kretchman each scoring to narrow the deficit. However, Virginia State responded with two of their own, including a power-play goal in the final minute of the half, making it 8-3 at the break.
Davis & Elkins continued to battle in the second half but struggled to keep pace with Virginia State's attack. Tanner Delorme tallied a third-quarter goal assisted by Jordan Delorme, while Smith added his second goal of the game in the fourth. Despite a strong effort, Virginia State's offense proved too much, adding six goals in the final period to secure the victory.
The Senators' goalkeeper, Avery Linthicum, recorded 17 saves against 46 shots faced. Davis & Elkins won 10 faceoffs and collected 26 ground balls but was hampered by 27 turnovers and a 0-for-5 performance on power plays.
