INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College fell to West Virginia State, 98-69, in a Mountain East Conference men's basketball matchup Wednesday night at the Walker Convocation Center.
West Virginia State (13-11, 9-8 MEC) surged ahead early, taking a 39-22 lead into halftime behind efficient shooting and defensive pressure. The Yellow Jackets capitalized on 17 turnovers by the Senators, converting them into 24 points while also holding a 42-34 rebounding advantage.
Davis & Elkins (9-16, 5-12 MEC) was led by Ja'Kobe Strozier, who tallied 18 points and five rebounds. Emmanuel Oladeru added 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting while grabbing six rebounds. Malachi Hampton contributed 10 points and four rebounds off the bench.
The Senators struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 20% (5-of-25) from three-point range. West Virginia State, on the other hand, connected on 10 three-pointers and shot 50% (32-of-64) from the field.
Davis & Elkins fought hard in the second half, scoring 47 points, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
