ELKINS, W.Va. — On a cold and rainy afternoon at Nuttall Field, the Davis & Elkins women's lacrosse team mounted a furious comeback but fell just short, dropping an 11-9 decision to Malone in the season opener Saturday.
The Senators (0-1) trailed 11-7 late in the fourth quarter before Ari Hinton sparked a last-minute surge. Hinton scored two goals in the final two minutes, bringing Davis & Elkins within one, but the Pioneers (1-0) held off the rally and sealed the victory with a late defensive stand.
Hinton led the Senators with four goals and two assists, while Hannah Lennon, Izzie Sevila, and Morgan Rogers each added a goal. Goalie Megan Bauer made seven saves in the loss.
The Pioneers capitalized on special teams, converting seven power-play goals, while Davis & Elkins netted just one.
Davis & Elkins outshot Malone 30-23 and won the draw control battle 17-6, but 26 turnovers proved costly.
