WHEELING, W.Va. – Despite a strong effort on the road, the Davis & Elkins men's basketball team fell to Wheeling, 80-73, in a tightly contested Mountain East Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at the Alma McDonough Center.
The Senators (9-14, 5-10 MEC) held their own in the first half, trailing by just five points at the break, 37-32. A back-and-forth second half saw D&E keep pace, but Wheeling (11-12, 6-9 MEC) capitalized at the free-throw line and closed out the game with clutch scoring down the stretch.
Charleston Ponds led the way for Davis & Elkins with a double-double, scoring 17 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. Emmanuel Oladeru added 14 points and a block, while Dontrell Jenkins chipped in 10 points with three assists. The Senators dominated the glass with a 50-38 rebounding edge but struggled with turnovers, committing 16 compared to Wheeling's eight.
The Cardinals' defense recorded nine steals and seven blocks. Wheeling held a key advantage at the free-throw line, hitting 34 of 43 attempts compared to D&E's 17 of 31.
