ELKINS, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins College women's basketball team fell to Fairmont State University 70-47 in Mountain East Conference play on Jan. 22 at the McDonnell Center. Fairmont State, a team receiving votes in the latest NCAA Division II top-25 poll, proved why they are a contender with a strong performance on both ends of the court.
Despite the loss, Davis & Elkins (1-14, 1-9 MEC) had several notable contributions. Jocelyn Gagnon led the Senators with 12 points, hitting two three-pointers and collecting four rebounds. Rebecca Kaba provided a spark off the bench with eight points on efficient shooting, while Jackie Wright controlled the glass with nine rebounds, including two offensive boards.
The Senators struggled offensively in the first half, scoring just 20 points and facing a 38-20 deficit at the break. They picked up the pace in the second half, led by better execution in the paint, but Fairmont State's depth and balanced attack kept the game out of reach.
Davis & Elkins' bench provided a significant portion of the team's scoring, contributing 32 points. However, turnovers (20 total) plagued the Senators, leading to 20 points for the Fighting Falcons.
