ELKINS, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins College men's basketball team faced a tough challenge on Jan. 22, hosting nationally-ranked No. 12 Fairmont State University. Despite battling throughout, the Senators ultimately fell 94-70 in a Mountain East Conference matchup at the McDonnell Center.
Nicolas Silva led the way for Davis & Elkins (6-11, 3-7 MEC), posting a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds while going 8-for-13 from the free-throw line. Ben Gilliam added 15 points, showcasing his efficiency with a 7-for-9 shooting performance, while Ron Haas contributed 10 points, including two three-pointers.
Fairmont State (15-2, 9-1 MEC), a team on a roll this season, showed why they are among the nation's elite. The Fighting Falcons jumped out to a 44-31 lead at halftime and kept the pressure on in the second half, led by their balanced scoring and defensive intensity.
The Senators managed to control the boards with 31 total rebounds, including 15 offensive boards, which led to 15 second-chance points. However, turnovers proved costly as D&E committed 19, leading to 28 points for Fairmont State.
