ELKINS, W.Va. — In a steady rain at Nuttall Field, the West Virginia State University women's soccer team shut out Davis & Elkins College 3-0 in a Mountain East Conference match Wednesday night.
The game remained scoreless through the first half, with both teams battling the elements. However, WVSU (4-1-2, 4-0-1 MEC) broke through in the second half, with Leila Karam finding net in the 53rd minute on an assist from Sandra Linares.
Linares doubled the lead just two minutes later, scoring in the 55th minute. Avril Amil Ruiz sealed the victory with a third goal in the 86th minute, capitalizing on a defense-splitting pass.
D&E (0-7-0, 0-5-0 MEC) managed five shots, only one of which was on target, as West Virginia State's Laura Galindo recorded one save for the shutout. Monica Birkelund made eight saves for D&E in the loss.
Despite some strong defensive efforts by D&E, West Virginia State dominated possession, taking 14 shots, with 11 on target, and earning seven corner kicks.
