Softball Splits Day 2 of Cactus Classic

Tucson, Ariz. -- The Senators picked up a win over Western New Mexico University behind strong pitching and a five run seventh inning to earn a split on day two of the Cactus Classic.

Game 1 vs Adams State University 11-6 Loss
The Senators fell behind early to Grizzlies and weren't able to recover. Dawn Morris would get the scoring going for the Senators with a RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. Lilly Saucedo would add an RBI single in the third inning.

Davis & Elkins would begin to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trailing 10-2, Linzey Allard would drive in a run with a single to right field. The score would remain the same until the bottom of the sixth inning when Alyssa Haynes singled in a run and later scored on a pass ball to cut the lead to 10-5 going into the 7th inning. Adams State would add another run in their half of the inning before Haynes would double in a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Haynes would end the game 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and a run scored.

Saucedo would go 3 for 3 with an RBI.

Game 2 vs Western New Mexico University 8-3 Win
The second game of the day for the Senators saw them take control of the game early and put it away with a five-run seventh inning. 

The Senators would get the scoring started in the top of the first inning with Linzey Allard drove in Sharon Morales with a sac fly to left field. Allard would add another RBI with a single in the third inning to extend the Senator lead to 2-0. Alyssa Haynes would add another run for the Senators with a sac fly in the fifth inning.

Western New Mexico would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth before Davis & Elkins would erupt for five runs in the seventh inning. Allard would get the scoring started with another RBI single. Trinity Fleming would follow a few batters later by driving in two runs with a ground rule double. Gweny Wessling and Trinity Cossette would both add RBI singles to end the scoring for the Senators.

Vanessa Hunt would pitch a complete game on the mound going 7 innings while striking out 3 and only giving up 1 earned run.

Allard would go 3 for 3 on the night with 3 RBI and a run scored.

Morales was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 3 stolen bases.

The Senators finish up their trip to Tucson, AZ with two more games on Saturday, February 10th starting with a game against the University of Hawaii at Hilo at 12pm.
