Offense Leads Senators Softball to 4-0 Start to Season

Pembroke, N.C. -- Coming off a NCAA Regional appearance in 2023, Davis & Elkins wasted no time getting the bats hot in North Carolina on their way to a 4-0 weekend. The Senators had five players hit over .400 for the weekend with Jules Gutierrez leading the way batting .500 (7-14) with 2 2B, 5 R and 4 RBI.

Game 1 - vs UNC Pembroke 8-5 W (2/2/24)
The Senators got on the board immediately when Sharon Morales led off the game with homerun in the first at bat of the season. In the third inning Linzey Allard drove a no doubt, 3-run homerun to deep center to extend the Senators lead to 4-0.

The fifth inning would see another offensive explosion for the Senators as they would push across four more runs to put the game away. Morales would drive in a run with a double, Lilly Saucedo would single in a run a couple of batters later, Morales would steal home and a Gweny Wessling walk would score the final run of the inning. 

Sammie Jarvis would pick up her first win of the season in relief by going 4.0 innings, striking out 4 while only allowing 2 earned runs.

Morales would lead the offensive attack by going 4-4 with 1 HR, 1 2B, 3 R, 3 SB and 2 RBI.

Game 2 - vs UNC Pembroke 13-6 W (2/3/24)
The bats would come out hot again for the Senators as they would score in each of the first four innings. Jules Gutierrez would get the scoring started with a RBI double to center field followed by an RBI single by Ashlyn Zapach.

The Senators would add on in the second inning by scoring three more runs to take a 5-1 lead. Alyssa Haynes doubled down the left field line to score the first run of the inning. Morales would add an RBI single to left field and Lilly Saucedo would it into a fielder's choice scoring the final run of the inning.

Davis & Elkins would score a run in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 8-1. The Senators would put the game away in the sixth inning by scoring three more runs which included RBI singles by Haynes and Linzey Allard to take a commanding 11-5 lead on their way to another victory.

Vanessa Hunt would get the win in the cirle by pitching 4.0 innings with 4 strikeouts and giving up 3 earned runs.

Guiterrez would go 3-4 in the game with 2 R and a RBI.

Haynes and Trinity Cossette would both go 3-5 with 2 runs scored.

Allard, Morales and Zapach would each collect 2 hits and score a combined 6 runs.

Game 3 - vs Felician 15-7 W (2/3/24)
The offense started strong again for the Senators in game three of the weekend as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Linzey Allard would get the scoring started with a sac fly to CF to drive in the first run. Ashlyn Zapach would follow with a 2-run homerun a couple of batters later to make the score 3-1 after an inning.

Felician would take a 7-3 lead going into the bottom for the fourth inning before the Senator bats would take over the rest of the game. In the bottom of the fourth inning Jules Gutierrez would get the scoring started with a 2 RBI single down the left field line. Lilly Saucedo and Trinity Cossette would each add an RBI on a walk and hit-by-pitch respectively. Gweny Wessling would cap off the scoring the fourth inning with a sac fly.

The fifth inning would see the Senators add three more runs and take an 11-7 lead. Trinity Fleming hit a 2-run homerun to left field and Cossett would follow a couple of batters later with an RBI double to right field.

The Senators would add four more runs in the sixth inning capped off by Fleming driving in two runs on a single through the left side of the infield.

Vanessa Hunt would pick up her second win on the weekend pitching 3.0 innings in relief.

Fleming would end the game going 3-3 with 4 RBI and 2 R.

Gutierrez would go 1-3 with 3 RBI and 2 R.

Game 4 - vs UNC Pembroke 3-2 W (2/4/24)
In the final game of the weekend the Senators relied on a strong pitching effort and some timely hitting to pick up their fourth win. The game remained scoreless until Lilly Sauceo singled up the middle in the fourth inning to give the Senators a 1-0 lead.

Linzey Allard would add to the lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single to right center. In the sixth inning Trinity Cossette would pick up an RBI on a fielder's choice groundout to give the Senators a 3-0 lead.

Sammie Jarvis would pick up her second win of the weekend going 4.1 innings in relief with 6 strikeouts and allowing no earned runs. Saylor Kneeland would pick up the save going .2 innings to end the game.

Jules Gutierrez went 3-4 with a 2B and 1 run scored.

Lilly Saucedo wend 2-3 with an RBI.

The Senators travel to Tuscon, AZ on February 8-10 to complete in the Cactus Classic. They open up the Cactus Classic against the University of Nebraska at Kearney on February 8th at 10am.
