ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College women's basketball team earned its first win of the season and first Mountain East Conference victory, defeating Point Park University 65-51 on Saturday afternoon at the McDonnell Center.
The Senators (1-9, 1-4 MEC) established dominance early, opening with a 29-point first quarter fueled by efficient shooting and relentless defense. Guard LaChazity Shaver led the team with 14 points, including three 3-pointers, while also pulling down six rebounds.
Forward Josiany Canales made her presence felt on both ends of the floor, registering a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, in addition to dishing out six assists. Alexis Smith added 12 points and four rebounds, consistently attacking the paint.
Davis & Elkins controlled the boards, matching Point Park with 45 rebounds while outscoring the Pioneers 34-28 in the paint. The Senators' defense forced 19 turnovers, converting them into 19 points.
Point Park (2-8, 1-5 MEC) struggled offensively, shooting just 26% from beyond the arc.
