ELKINS, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins welcomed the West Virginia Wesleyan, who shared the lead in the Mountain East Conference South to Joni Smith Field Wednesday afternoon and came away with 3-2 victories in both games of the home opening doubleheader.
GAME ONE
The Senators fell behind 2-0 in the second inning when the Bobcats scored two runners on a double.
Linzey Allard homered in the third inning, plating
Alyssa Haynes and
Anjolina Gutierrez and putting the Senators up 3-2. D&E held on the rest of the way for the win.
Haynes went 2 for 3 at the plate. Allard went 1 for 3 with the three-run homerun.
Honesty Holt,
Jules Gutierrez, and
Sharon Morales (double) each picked up hits for the Senators. Morales also stole a base.
Alexa Uphold went the distance for D&E, striking out two and giving up just one earned run in the win.
GAME TWO
Wesleyan again jumped out to the lead early, putting a run on the board in the first inning on a sacrifice fly.
D&E answered in the second inning on a
Kailynn Parks single that scored
Jules Gutierrez and the game was knotted at one apiece.
The Senators took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when
Maddie Lavelle hit a solo homerun.
D&E scored once more in the fifth inning when
Anjolina Gutierrez hit an RBI double that scored
Mia Ely.
The Bobcats score one final run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as D&E won 3-2.
Anjolina Gutierrez went 2 for 3 from the plate with an RBI. Allard, Lavelle (HR),
Jules Gutierrez, Ely (double), Parks, and Morales each earned a hit at the plate.
Vanessa Hunt earned the win for D&E. The pitcher struck out five batters and gave up just two earned runs.
Davis & Elkins is now 17-21 overall and 11-9 in the MEC. The Senators are on the road Friday (Wheeling) and Saturday (West Liberty) for doubleheaders.
