WHEELING, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins softball continued its hot streak in the state's upper panhandle, sweeping both Wheeling and West Liberty to run the current win streak to nine games.
In both series, the Senators were able to grind out wins in the first games of the set and then put on an offensive show in the second games to win in convincing fashion.
GAME ONE vs WHEELING
D&E put two runs on the board in the third inning.
Sharon Morales hit an RBI double to left field that scored
Kailynn Parks. Later in the inning,
Alyssa Haynes scored when
Linzey Allard singled to center field.
The two runs were enough for D&E to hold on to the win as Wheeling scored a single run in the fifth inning and both teams remained scoreless through the final two innings of the game and the Senators survived with the 2-1 win.
Haynes went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double. Allard, Parks, Morales (double),
Anjolina Gutierrez, and
Maddie Lavelle each had hits for the Senators.
Alex Uphold and
Saylor Kneeland split time on the mound for D&E. Uphold pitched three innings, striking out three with no earned runs and picked up the win. Kneeland pitched four innings in in the save effort, struck out one, and gave up one earned run.
GAME TWO vs WHEELING
In the second game of the doubleheader, D&E jumped out the 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an
Anjolina Gutierrez RBI single that plated
Mia Ely and
Jules Gutierrez.
Wheeling answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 2-2.
The Senators tacked on three runs in the fourth inning and from that point forward it was all D&E. Once again,
Anjolina Gutierrez sparked D&E with an RBI single that advanced a trio of players around the bases and scored
Jules Gutierrez. Next, Allard reached first on an error and Parks scored. Finally, Lavelle walked with the bases loaded and Morales walked across home plate. The Senators led 5-2 by the end of the inning.
D&E scored again in the fifth inning as
Anjolina Gutierrez hit another RBI single that scored
Zenevieve Coronado-Casebolt.
The Senators had a huge seventh inning, scoring eight runs.
Anjolina Gutierrez again sparked the offensive attack with an RBI single, her fourth of the game. Ely scored to put D&E up 7-2. Haynes added an RBI single of her own and scored Parks. Allard then came to bat with Haynes and
Anjolina Gutierrez on base and brought them home with a three-run shot that cleared the fence and put D&E up 12-2. Parks put the finishing touch on the offensive display with a single to left center that scored
Jules Gutierrez and Lavelle. The Senators cruised to a 14-2 victory.
Anjolina went 5 for 6 from the plate with 5 RBIs.
Jules Gutierrez was 3 for 3 batting and scored 3 runs. Ely and Parks were both 2 of 3 batting as Parks added 2 RBIs. Morales also had multiple hits in the game. Haynes, Lavelle, and Allard (HR) each picked up hits in the contest.
Vanessa Hunt went the distance for D&E, pitching seven innings, striking out three, and giving up two earned runs in the win.
GAME ONE vs WEST LIBERTY
In a fast-paced game that lasted only around an hour and a half, the Senators used two two-run innings (fourth and fifth) that the Hilltoppers were unable to answer in a 4-0 victory.
In the fourth,
Honesty Holt singled and advanced to second on the throw. Haynes scored and Allard scored after advancing to third and then scoring on an error by the left fielder.
In the fifth inning, Allard slapped a single through the left side of the infield that scored Morales and Parks.
Haynes, Allard, Holt, Ely, and Parks had hits for D&E. Morales stole a base.
Uphold picked up her second complete game win on the weekend, pitching seven innings, striking out three, and giving up zero earned runs.
GAME TWO vs WEST LIBERTY
D&E jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk of
Jules Gutierrez that scored Haynes.
West Liberty answered and took the lead in the bottom of the inning to put the Senators down 1-2.
D&E scored three more runs in the top of the third inning.
Jules Gutierrez bunted safely to first and Allard scored. Parks then singled through the left side and scored
Jules Gutierrez and Holt.
The Hilltoppers scored a run in the bottom of the third to pull within one, 4-3.
West Liberty jumped out to the lead again when they scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
D&E put two runs on the board in the sixth and two in the seventh to put the game out of reach 8-5.
In the sixth, Allard homered and brought in Haynes.
In the seventh,
Lorena Ruiz-Rubio hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Coronado-Casebolt and then Ely stole home on a double-steal.
Jules Gutierrez went 3 for 3 at the plate. Allard, Holt, and Parks were each 2 for 4 and Ely also picked up a hit in the game. Allard (HR) and Parks each had 2 RBIs and
Jules Gutierrez and Ruiz-Rubio had one RBI apiece.
Hunt got the start for D&E and pitched three innings. She struck out one and gave up three earned runs. Kneeland got the win in relief, pitching four innings, striking out four, and giving up two earned runs.
The Senators, winners of nine in-a-row and twelve of their last fourteen play next on Saturday, April 22 at home against West Virginia State. The doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
