PEMBROKE, N.C. -- Davis & Elkins split a doubleheader on the road with UNC Pembroke on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The Senators fell in Game One 7-1, but warmed up their bats in Game Two and survived a late rally by the home team to win 14-13.
In the first game, D&E opened the scoring when
Anjolina Gutierrez scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.
UNC Pembroke added five runs in the first and then a pair of insurance runs in the fourth to take the opening contest 7-1.

Jules Gutierrez, and
Anjolina Gutierrez each had a hit in the game.
In the second game, D&E opening the scoring in the first inning on a double-steal.
Jules Gutierrez stole second while
Anjolina Gutierrez stole home. Pembroke evened the score in the bottom of the inning on a single up the middle.
The Senators scored a pair of runs in the second inning. First,
Alyssa Haynes scored on a
Mia Ely sacrifice fly, then
Sharon Morales scored off an
Anjolina Gutierrez single. Pembroke again even the score at 3-3 on a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.
D&E had a big third inning, scoring six runs. First,
Jules Gutierrez singled in
Linzey Allard. Next, Haynes knocked in
Jules Gutierrez. Zapach then advanced home when Morales was hit by a pitch.
Rachel Jones scored the inning's fourth run on a passed ball. Ely scored next on an
Anjolina Gutierrez single to center field. The sixth run, putting D&E up 9-3 came when Morales scored on a fielder's choice.
Pembroke scored four runs in the fourth inning to pull within two of the Senators, 9-7.
In the fifth inning,
Anjolina Gutierrez doubled to right field, scoring Ely. Gutierrez and Morales then scored on an Allard single to center field to put the Senators up 12-7.
D&E added two more runs in the sixth inning when Morales doubled down the left field line and Haynes and Jones both scored, putting the Senators up 14-7.
Pembroke rallied, scoring one run in the sixth inning and five in the seventh inning, but fell short. D&E won Game Two 14-13.
Vanessa Hunt picked up the win for D&E and
Saylor Kneeland picked up the save.
