D&E Drops MEC Tournament Opener to Frostburg State

WHEELING, W.Va. -- The Davis & Elkins women's basketball team's season came to a close at Wesbanco Arena at the hands of Frostburg State in the first round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament 70-64. D&E came in as the #8 seed and Frostburg was the #9 seed as the Senators had won the two regular season matchups.

D&E had to battle back from an early deficit. They trailed by as much as fourteen in the game. The Senators quickly fell behind in the contest as Frostburg put together a solid offensive effort in the first quarter of play. The Bobcats outscored D&E 20-10 in the quarter on 6-16 from the field and 7-8 from the free throw line.

The Senators chipped away at Frostburg's lead in the second quarter. Shooting 43.75 percent from the field and 33.33 percent from behind the arc, D&E pulled within seven, 34-27 at halftime.

D&E came out of the locker room hot in the third quarter. They shot 62.5 percent on 10 of 16 from the field, including 3 of 5 from three-point range. LaChazity Shaver hit two big three-pointers and Taylor Smith buried another to help the Senators pull ahead of Frostburg 52-49 with a twenty-five point quarter.

Frostburg added a hot fourth quarter of their own, shooting 63.64 percent from the field and outscoring D&E 21-12 to put the game on ice and advance to face top-seeded Glenville State.

Freshman guard, Ellie Wilkerson led the Senators with 17 points and 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals.

All-MEC Second-Teamer, Smith finished with 12 points. She also added a pair of rebounds and assists and 3 steals.

Jackie Wright chipped in eleven points off the bench and added 6 rebounds.

Jaela Reid added 10 points, Shaver had 6, Kaylee Milburn added 4, and Karlie Denham and Madison Butler added 2 apiece.
