Volleyball Competes With MEC North's Top Teams

WHEELING, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins traveled to the Wheeling area for a pair of Mountain East Conference Northern Divisional volleyball matchups and fell in each. The Senators played West Liberty on Friday evening and Wheeling on Saturday afternoon. Wheeling and West Liberty are the number one and two teams in the MEC North, respectively.

In their Friday evening with West Liberty, D&E put the pressure on the Hilltoppers in the first set but fell 25-23. There were sixteen ties and eleven lead changes in the first set alone. West Liberty applied a bit more pressure in the second and third sets, winning 25-17 and 25-16, respectively.

In the contest, Brittany Portley led D&E with six kills, while Gracjana Rozanska added five. Simone Daniels led the Senators with fifteen set assists and a pair of service aces. Rozanska led D&E with three blocks and Portley and Katie Beth Caudill added two blocks apiece. Reanne DeBose's ten digs led the way, while Haylie Marumoto added nine.

Against Wheeling on Saturday, D&E fell in three sets, 25-14, 25-11, 25-11 against the MEC North's top team.

Portley contributed four kills and a game-high three blocks in the contest. Rozanska added a game-high six kills and added a pair of blocks. Daniels led D&E again with seventeen assists. Marumoto led her team with ten digs as Logan Haught and Melisa Ozsar added seven each. Marumoto and Clara Caralt each had a service ace.

The Senators are back in action on Friday, October 20 against Fairmont State. The home contest begins at 7pm.
