INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- In what seemed like a one-sided match, Davis & Elkins pushed the Mountain East Conference South's number one overall team throughout but could not manage a set win in a 3-0 loss to West Virginia State University on the road.
Set one saw ten tie scores and four lead changes, but a late West Virginia State push sealed a 25-20 set victory.
In set two, D&E and West Virginia State again battled back-and-forth. This time it took fifty-two points to determine the set winner. Through five lead changes and seven score ties, West Virginia State again pulled out the set win at 27-25.
The Yellowjackets took early control of set three and kept a slight edge throughout. D&E managed to pull back to tie the score twice but was unable to take the lead during the set and it ended 25-22 with West Virginia State sealing the set win and match victory.
D&E's Macie Magallon led all players with 17 kills. She also led in points with 17.5. Her teammate Brilane Manchego led all with 35 set assists. Jeanne Hassoun led all with 3 service aces. Clara Caralt added 11 digs, trailing only the Yellowjackets' Alex Darby who had 12.
The loss was D&E's second in-a-row, but the two losses came at the hands of teams on hot streaks. The University of Charleston is currently riding a ten-game win streak. The Golden Eagles are 16-2 and 3-0 in the MEC. West Virginia State picked up their fourteenth win in-a-row against the Senators. The Yellowjackets are winners of sixteen of seventeen matches on the season and are also 3-0 in the MEC.
D&E falls to 8-7 with the loss and 1-2 in the MEC. They look to bounce back on Friday, September 30 against Concord University at home to kickoff Homecoming Weekend. The 7pm start is Aloha Friday and Alumni Night.
