ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College softball team was successful in sweeping Concord today in the team's last regular-season action and their senior day. The Senators won game one 5-4 and game two 8-5 on their way to securing a winning record for the regular season.
Game One
D&E was behind early in game one, with the score reading 2-0 Concord at the top of the third when
Mia Mendoza homered to center field to start a comeback. A
Jules Gutierrez homer to center field tied the game 2-2 after four complete innings. In the bottom of the fifth Mendoza would put the Senators ahead 3-2 connecting on a solo shot down the left field line. The Mountain Lions would not back down, regaining the lead in the seventh leaving the Senators with work to do. Coach
Elle Fracker's team were up to the task.
Linzey Allard doubled down the left field line bringing home Mendoza, then
Maddie Lavelle walked it off with a single to left field scoring Allard to make the score 5-4 and give the Senators the victory in game one.
Mendoza led D&E at the plate going 3-4 with two RBIs and two home runs. Lavelle went 2-4 with 1 RBI. Senior
Ava Willis shined on her senior day, pitching for six innings, allowing one earned run on nine hits.
Jenna Evans made a relief appearance to earn the win.
Game Two
Once again, a slow start for the Senators left a lot to do to win game two. D&E found themselves down 5-0 after three complete innings. The Senators would score eight unanswered runs the rest of the way to secure the season sweep over the Mountain Lions.
Trinity Cossette got the comeback started in the fourth with a double to left center bringing home Lavelle and catcher
Honesty Holt.
Kailynn Parks then scored in the fifth on an error by the left fielder. The sixth inning would be where D&E took and extended the lead beyond Concord's reach. First was a
Sharon Morales triple to right field scoring Cossette to make it 5-4, then Mendoza and Morales both scored on an error by the shortstop giving the Senators their first lead in the game. Allard doubled to left field and
Kailynn Parks scored unearned, then Allard scored on another error by the shortstop. In the bottom of the sixth, the score read 8-5 to D&E and it finished that way.
Cossette went a perfect 3-3 at the plate, with 2 RBIs, and led the Senators in the second game.
Linzey Allard was solid with 3-4 and 1 RBI. Lavelle and Morales both went 1-3. Morales added an RBI.
Emily Bowen and
Jenna Evans both spent time on the mound, with Bowen pitching 3.2 innings allowing 5 hits and 5 runs. Evans was solid with 3.1 innings pitched, allowing just 2 hits, 0 runs, and striking out two. Evans would finish her regular season with a 9-8 record.
D&E improves to 26-25 overall and 22-10 in the Mountain East Conference.
Concord finishes the season 17-35 and 10-22 in the league.
The Senators have secured a spot in next weekend's MEC tournament. The tournament will take place in Salem, Virginia from May 6 to May 8.
