ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College softball team earned a split with Mountain East Conference perennial power West Virginia Wesleyan College Monday afternoon at Joni Smith Field. The Senators dropped the first game of the day 2-0 to the Bobcats. D&E bounced back and took game two 8-4.
GAME ONE
A two-run homer was the difference in game one. Wesleyan's Alli Robinson connected on the homer in the top of the third. That would be the only scoring of the contest.
Ava Willis was solid in the circle, giving up just two runs and scattering eight hits.
Jules Gutierrez had both hits for the Senators.
GAME TWO
Gutierrez opened the scoring in game two launching a two-run homer over the left field fence to put D&E up 2-0 after an inning of play. Wesleyan would answer in the top of the second scoring two runs. The score would remain tied until the bottom of the fifth. Catcher
Honesty Holt came to the plate with the bases loaded. Holt would launch a grand slam over the right field fence and give the Senators a 6-2 lead. Davis & Elkins would add two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-2. Wesleyan added two in the seventh to make the final score 8-4.
Linzey Allard went 3-4. Allard had a single, two doubles, two RBIs, and scored a run. Gutierrez went 1-1 with the homer and two RBIs.
Kailynn Parks added a hit and scored twice.
Mia Mendoza added a hit.
Davis & Elkins is now 23-24 overall and 19-9 in the MEC.
Wesleyan is 29-14-1 overall and 19-7 in the league.
The Senators return to action Friday, hosting Glenville State for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm.
