ELKINS, W.Va. – Coach
Elle Fracker and her Davis & Elkins College softball team finally played at home today. The Senators played host to North Division Mountain East Conference leader West Liberty University at Joni Smith Field. D&E homered three times on their way to an 8-3 win in game one of the doubleheader. In game two the Hilltoppers scored six runs the final three innings to secure a 7-3 win.
Game One
West Liberty's Jairika Baylor opened the scoring for the day hitting a home run to center field. It wouldn't take long for the Senators to answer as lead off hitter
Mia Mendoza blasted a home run to left center to tie it at one.
Jules Gutierrez connected on a homer to left field in the bottom of the second to put the Senators up for good.
Sharon Morales added an RBI single in the inning to make it 3-1 after two complete innings.
Rachel Jones knocked in
Honesty Holt in the bottom half of the third extend D&E's lead to 4-1. Gutierrez homered for a second time and Senator would add three more runs in the fifth inning to make 8-1 after five. Pitcher
Ava Willis would allow only two runs the final two innings to secure a 7-3 win.
Mendoza went 2-2 at the plate for two RBI's, with a homer and single. Mendoza also had two free passes and scored twice. Gutierrez finished game one going 2-3 with two solo home runs. Jones was 2-3 with an RBI.
Linzey Allard had an RBI double.
Ava Willis was impressive in the circle, going the distance allowing two earned runs and scattering nine hits.
Game Two
Allard put the Senators up in the bottom of the third connecting on a three-run homer to left center. D&E led 3-1 after three complete innings. The Hilltoppers took advantage of a Senator era in the top of the fifth and took a 4-3 lead. West Liberty would add runs in the sixth and seventh innings to close out a 7-3 win.
Allard went 2-3 with three RBI's and a run scored. Holt added a hit.
Davis & Elkins is now 17-22 overall and 13-7 in the MEC.
West Liberty is 22-14-1 and 12-5 in the league.
The Senators return to action tomorrow morning, hosting the Wheeling Cardinals for a doubleheader. Game one first pitch is set for 10:00am.
