ELKINS, W.Va. – The David & Elkins College softball team completed their first home sweep of the season today. D&E beat Wheeling University 7-0 in the morning game, and then 10-1 in the afternoon. Today's sweep makes it four sweeps in the Mountain East Conference for coach
Elle Fracker's team this season.
Game One
Honesty Holt opened the scoring in game one in the bottom half of third inning when she hit a double to right field and brought home
Linzey Allard. At the end of the third the score read 1-0. Two home runs in the fifth inning gave the Senators a clear advantage, Allard notched the first and
Jules Gutierrez followed with one of her own as she brought home
Maddie Lavelle and Holt to make the score 5-0. Allard added another homer in the sixth which brought the score to 7-0 and D&E would be able to keep Wheeling scoreless in the seventh to secure the shutout win.
Allard went a perfect 4-4 at the plate, notching 3 RBI and connecting on two home runs.
Trinity Cossette hit well going 2-3. Holt was 2-4 with 1 RBI.
Jenna Evans was fantastic as she pitched all seven innings in game one only allowing two hits.
Game Two
It was much of the same for D&E in game two to complete a dominating sweep of the doubleheader against Wheeling.
Jules Gutierrez smacked a grand slam home run in the first inning to take a 4-1 early lead. Three more runs came in the second innings after Kailyn Parks doubled to right center and
Alysia Huerta singled to center field. Singles by
Mia Mendoza in the third and fourth innings put the Senators out of sight making the score 9-1 and when Parks was hit by a pitch in the fourth allowing
Rachel Jones to score the game was all but done. With the Cardinals unable to mount a comeback and scoreless in the fifth, D&E would take game two 10-1 after five.
Mia Mendoza led the team going a perfect 3-3 at the plate with 2 RBI, while
Sharon Morales and
Jules Gutierrez both went 2-3. Gutierrez had a team high 4 RBI in game two. More strong pitching from the Senators helped secure the win. This time by senior
Ava Willis who spent all five innings on the mound allowing four hits and one run.
D&E improves to 19-22 on their 2022 campaign, while holding a 15-7 record in the MEC. Next up is more home action when West Virginia Wesleyan makes the short trip to Joni Smith Field. The doubleheader is scheduled for Wednesday April 20. First pitch for game one is at 2 pm.
