BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College softball team traveled to Buckhannon for a doubleheader against local rivals West Virginia Wesleyan College. They came away with a split after dropping game one 7-4 but bouncing back in game two, with a 3-1 victory.
Game One
D&E started well and took an early lead in the second inning.
Sharon Morales hit a triple to right center notching two RBI when she brought home
Rachel Jones and
Jules Gutierrez. The Bobcats halved the deficit in the third inning but the Senators kept their foot down. Jones reached first on an error and
Mia Ely scored in the fourth, then
Linzey Allard grounded out to second base unassisted and was able to bring home Kailyn Parks. At the bottom of the fifth D&E led 4-1, then Wesleyan fought back. Some solid hitting in the fifth and sixth innings gave them the advantage and with the Senators unable to stop them they took a 7-4 lead and would see out the seventh inning for the victory in game one.
Morales, Parks, Allard and
Maddie Lavelle all went 1-3 at the plate and notched D&E's four hits. Morales had 2 RBI which led her team.
Jenna Evans was at the mound for the majority of game one!
Game Two
D&E used their short turn around well and bounced back in the second game. The Senators made use of few hits and kept Wesleyan to only one run on way to a low scoring 3-1 win. Again, coach
Elle Fracker's women started fast in the first inning,
Maddie Lavelle doubled to left field, bringing home
Honesty Holt and
Linzey Allard giving the team a 2-0 lead. An error in the third let Holt reach first and Kailyn Parks score to make it 3-0. Although D&E wouldn't score another run,
Shelby Hile on the mound would keep the Bobcats to one run the rest of the game and it would finish 3-1 in favor of Davis & Elkins. Kailyn Parks led the team in game two going 2-4 at the plate and Lavelle led with 2 RBI. Hile pitched for all seven innings, only allowing six hits and one run while only conceding one error.
D&E moves to 16-21 on the 2022 campaign, and 12-6 in the Mountain East Conference. Next up for the Senators is the first home action of the season at Joni Smith Field when they face West Liberty University. Game one against the Hilltoppers is scheduled for Friday 15 April at 2 pm. WLU comes into Friday's action 21-13-1 on their season, while holding an impressive 11-4 record in the MEC.
