NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Davis & Elkins College softball team traveled to Newberry, South Carolina this weekend, and competed in the Newberry Round Robin. The Senators would play Newberry College and King University once each day, before returning home to Elkins.
Day One
At 11 am, Coach
Elle Fracker's team faced Newberry College, dropping the contest by a score of 4-1. D&E was down by a narrow run early on, until
Sharon Morales singled to third and
Trinity Cossette scored for the Senators to tie the game in the top of the third. The Wolves regained the lead in the bottom of the third to take 3-1 lead. Newberry would add a run in the sixth and clinch the victory over D&E.
Senior pitcher,
Haley Grindstaff was on the mound for the duration of game one. She pitched six innings, only allowing 5 hits throughout.
In the afternoon, Davis & Elkins would face King University. The Tornado's six-run third inning put them out of reach early in the game with the Senators unable to mount a comeback.
Trinity Cossette and
Kailynn Parks notched D&E's only runs of the afternoon game.
Linzey Allard,
Jenna Evans, and
Ava Willis all spent time on the mound throughout, with Willis pitching the majority with 4.1 innings pitched. Willis, a senior, showed her experience against some strong hitting, only allowing four hits and one run during her spell on the mound.
The Senators would have a chance for redemption when they faced both teams in rematches on Sunday morning!
Day Two
The second day of play started with a rematch against King University. Davis & Elkins would struggle with their hitting falling 4-0. Freshman pitcher
Shelby Hile was on the mound for the majority of the game with four innings pitched,
Jenna Evans pitched the other two innings. The Senators were only able to pick up two hits throughout the game, both by junior
Rachel Jones.
In the afternoon game, D&E was faced a rematch with Newberry College. The Senators hitting was better in game two but wasn't enough to beat the strong Newberry Wolves, the final score was 8-2. Despite the defeat, there are good signs for coach
Elle Fracker as four of the six hits of the game were notched by freshmen. The Senators' highlight of the game was an
Alyssa Bailey home run in the sixth inning, the first of her college career. Freshman
Emily Bowen pitched five innings with
Haley Grindstaff picking up the other.
Senator softball heads home to Elkins after falling 2-13 on their season and looks ahead to their first conference games. First up is Frostburg State for a double-header on March 19 scheduled for 12 and 2 pm.
