Athens, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins softball team traveled to Athens, West Virginia to take on Concord University in a doubleheader today. The Senators returned to Elkins with a two-game sweep over the Mountain Lions.
Game One
The first game of the day saw a 9-1 victory for Davis & Elkins, the Senators got off to flying start, and, before Concord knew it, were out of sight. Four runs in the second inning gave D&E a solid lead early,
Mia Mendoza started off a great day with a double to right-center notching three runs batted in, then scored herself for the fourth run making it 5-0 in the bottom of the second. When Mendoza doubled to left field and saw two more teammates home the score read 7-0 in the third and D&E cruised to their largest win of the 2022 campaign.
Mendoza went 4-4 at the plate and notched six rbi,
Sharon Morales was 2-2 and
Rachel Jones and Kailyn Parks both went 2-3.
Jenna Evans was on the mound for all five innings, allowing two hits and one run. Evans struck out four Mountain Lions.
Game Two
D&E showed no signs of slowing down in game two, as they dominated and secured an even larger win in just five innings. Concord looked like they were going to bounce back after a fast start to game two, they took a 3-0 lead after the first inning as they looked to get their revenge for the earlier game. However, the Senators led by freshman
Mia Mendoza again proved too much for Concord. Mendoza hit the first home run of her college career in the second inning and the grand slam gave D&E the lead, 4-3. After that Concord would draw even once more in the bottom of the second but would not have the lead for the rest of the game. Six runs in the fifth inning with no response finished the game and again Davis & Elkins recorded their largest victory of the season.
Players throughout the line-up hit well in game two. Mendoza went 4-4 once again and had 5 runs batted in. Fellow freshmen
Shelby Hile and
Trinity Cossette went 3-4 at the plate, and both notched 3 runs batted in.
Linzey Allard was also strong going 2-4 and Kailyn Parks matched her game one hitting stats with 2-3.
Senior pitcher
Ava Willis was on the mound for all five innings, allowing four hits and four runs, with just one error.
Davis and Elkins improves to 6-17 overall, and 4-2 in the Mountain East Conference.
