Senator Baseball Drops Pair to Fairmont State

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – Coach Tim Miller's Davis & Elkins College baseball team traveled to Nutter Fort, West Virginia today for doubleheader with Fairmont State University.  The Falcons took game one (5-4) on a walk-off single.  FSU carried that momentum into game two scoring five runs in the first two innings on their way to an 8-2 win.

Fairmont scored two runs in the bottom of second inning to take a 2-0 lead.  Austin Beattie doubled to right center to lead off the fourth inning.  Chase DeGrood knocked Beattie in on a single up the middle.  The Falcons would add a run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-1 after four innings.  Wesley Athey singled to lead of the fifth inning.  Jayden Nixon would knock Athey in to make it 3-2 going to the bottom of the fifth.  Beattie would walk to start the sixth.  Cole Hitch hit a two-run shot over the left field wall to put the Senators on top.  Fairmont State would tie it up in the bottom of the sixth on a Jacob Goodnight solo shot.  The Senators would go down in order the top half of the seventh.  Alex Tennant singled to start the bottom of the seventh.  Tennant would move over to second base on a fielder's choice before being knocked in on a single to left by Zachary Musgrove.

Cole Hitch had two runs batted in to lead D&E.  Chase DeGrood and Wesley Athley each had two hits.  DeGrood added an RBI.  Jayden Nixon recorded one hit and had one RBI.

Fairmont State scored five runs in the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead heading to the third inning.  Austin Beattie would walk to start the inning.  Cole Hitch would moved him over to second on a single.  Beattie would get the Senators on the board scoring after back to back wild pitches.  FSU would add two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 7-1.  Wesley Athey doubled in the fifth and was brought in on a Jayden Nixon single.  Jacob Goodnight homered in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 8-2.

Athey had two hits.  Nixon had an RBI.  Beattie, Hitch, Nixon, and Zachary Higgins all had one hit. 

The Senators drop to 3-11 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain East Conference.

The Falcons improve to 7-9 overall and 2-0 in the MEC.

D&E returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Frostburg State for a doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
