ELKINS, W. Va. - It was a beautiful fall day at Nuttall Field as the Davis & Elkins Men's Soccer team (15-2-1, 14-2) took to their home pitch to host Notre Dame College in the MEC semifinal match on Thursday. By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Senators were left stunned by the Falcons after they battled to a 2-2 draw late in full time and won the game on a decisive PK shootout, 3-2.
In the first half, momentum was clearly on the side of the Senators as they held NDC without a shot while getting off 7 shots, 4 on goal. MEC Offensive Player of the Year
Cristhian Bosquez had two excellent scoring chances in the 27th minute and the 34th minute, but each was saved by the Falcons keeper.
D&E came out on the attack in the second half. The first score of the game came just over a minute in on a goal from
Dominique Castano, his third of the season, with an assist from
Martin Lago. Just seven minutes later,
Daniel Cerezo found the net with an assist from
Beltran Fernandez, making it 2-0 in the 54th minute.
With time ticking away in the 85th minute, a costly Senators foul gave Notre Dame their first score on a penalty kick. With the Falcons still trailing 2-1 nearing the 88-minute mark, NDC's forward was able to punch one in off a cross for the late equalizer, silencing the once raucous crowd and all but ensuring extra time.
After two additional ten-minute periods the game remained a draw and moved to a shootout to determine the outcome. Tied 2-2 in PKs after three shots per team, NDC scored high-right into the goal to give the Falcons the edge. Davis & Elkins'
Josh Gabriel just missed wide right on his shot attempt to end the game and send Notre Dame to the finals with a 3-2 edge in PKs.
Despite the result, Davis & Elkins had a 16-5 advantage in total shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. The Senators also had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
The team finishes their incredible season with a 15-2-1 overall record, 14-2 in conference. They spent 3 weeks ranked number 1 in the nation in DII soccer and all but the final few weeks in the top 10 in DII. Ten Senators were recognized by the MEC, with 4 making the All-Conference First-Team, 5 on the Second-Team and one on the All-Freshman team, as well as the Offensive Player of the Year.
D&E still may continue to compete in the NCAA Tournament, they look ahead to this weekend to determine whether they will receive an at-large bid.
