Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Promising Season Ends for Women's Soccer in MEC Quarterfinals

INSTITUTE, W. Va. - After fighting their way into the MEC Quarterfinals, the Senators Women's Soccer team's season came to an end on Tuesday. They put up a solid defensive effort on the pitch but ultimately fell to the first-seeded Yellowjackets of West Virginia State. There were several statistical highlights on the season for D&E, however, as the program looks forward to a bright future.

In the first half, D&E advanced up the field early. Sachiko Gamo got off the first shot of the game at the five minute mark, sending it high but missing over the net. West Virginia State countered just a few minutes later with two shots, one of which was on target but was saved by Katie Clarke

The first score of the game came in the 14th minute off a WVSU corner kick that provided an opportunity to knock the ball just past Clarke, making it 1-nil in favor of the Yellowjackets.

This seemed to spark an offensive attack by the Senators, as they immediately countered with shots-on-goal from MEC Freshman of the Year Seika Ikezoe and then by Gamo five minutes later. A D&E corner kick provided another great scoring chance but Gamo wasn't able to find net. Later in the half, Clarke had another big save and the Senators finished the half with another offensive barrage that proved fruitless, 3 shots with one on target but saved by the WVSU keeper.

The second half opened with continued aggressive play by D&E with shots at minutes 49 and 50 by Alexa Karsel and Tamsin Medd-Gill that were blocked and saved, respectively. Minutes later, the Yellowjackets again were able to find net to go up 2-0 on the Senators.  The rest of the game was marked by solid defense by both teams as each side had opportunities to score but were ultimately denied.

The Senators finish their season with a 9-8-1 record, 8-7-1 in conference. They set several program milestones this season, including scoring the most MEC points in program history with 25, the most goals scored in the conference and 4th most goals scored in Division II. They also had the most assists in the MEC and the 10th most assists in DII, and the 5th most points per game in DII.
