ELKINS, W.Va. - Rachel Swartz's Davis & Elkins women's basketball team hosted West Virginia State Monday night in the McDonnell Center. The Senators gave a great effort in their upset bid falling 68-65 to the Jackets
The Senators came ready to play, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead.  WV State responded and tied the game at 24 after a quarter of play. The two teams would trade buckets most of the second quarter. Marissa Berlin would hit a pull up jumper with four seconds left to give the Senators a 32-31 halftime lead. The Jackets would end the third quarter on a 14-5 run to take a nine point lead (57-48) into the final quarter. WV State led by ten points (64-54) with 6.55 to go in the fourth quarter after a made two-point jumper by Ashley Davis.  D&E finished the contest on an 11-4 run, and made it a one-point game with 13 seconds left after Allie Taylor made two free throws. In the end, D&E couldn't tie it up as Kaylee Milburn's three-point attempt came up short.
West Virginia State was led by Charity Shears with 19 points. Shears shot 5-9 from the floor and a near perfect 8-9 from the free throw line. Shelby Harmeyer had 10 points followed by Ashley Davis eight.
Peyton Mohler continued her spectacular play of late securing a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Mohler shot 10-14 from the floor and dished out a team high  seven assists. She was backed by Allie Taylor with 15 points and four rebounds. Berlin had 12 points followed by Dream Cherry eight.
Davis & Elkins falls to 5-14, and 2-12 in the conference.
West Virginia State improves to 13-5, and 9-4 in the Mountain East Conference.
Next up, D&E will travel to Alderson Broaddus on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm inside Rex Pyles Arena.
