ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins men's basketball team hosted rival West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon inside the McDonnell Center. The Senators pulled out the win by a score of 80-69.
A
Bryton Bissainthe lay-up with 12:23 to go in the first half put the Senators up 10, 22-12. Wesleyan would battle back and cut the lead to 5 on a Tommie Pope lay-up with 10:56 to go in the half. D&E would extend their lead to 11, 37-26 with 3:48 remaining in the opening half. The Bobcats would claw their way back into the game ending the first half on a 10-0 run, to make it 37-36 at the break.
The two teams would battle close throughout the second half. Wesleyan would take a six-point lead 61-55 with 8:55 to go, but
Daniel Mondragon's Senators would bounce right back. A pair of
Charleston Ponds free throws at the 5:53 mark of the second half would put the Senators up 64-63, they would not trail the rest of the way, ending the game on a 16-6 run.
Sam Rolle IV led the Senators in scoring with 23 points. Rolle connected on 5-8 three-point attempts and dished out five assists.
Breland Walton returned to the line-up and was his usual self, scoring 18 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
Charleston Ponds had 16 points and grabbed 6 boards.
Cortney Walton just missed a double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Bissainthe had a team high seven assists.
Wesleyan was led by Braeden McGrew with 17 points, followed by Jayden Hibbitt with 13.
The Senators improve to 6-10 overall and 4-7 in Mountain East Conference play.
The Bobcats drop to 2-16 and 1-11 in the MEC.
D&E will hit the road Monday night, traveling to Charleston. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm.
