Elkins, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins women's basketball team win a thriller on New Year's Day against Fayetteville State, 61-58.
In a game of runs, it looked like the Senators were going to run away with it early. D&E was out to a 10-0 start with Fayetteville State's first basket coming at the 3:46 mark in the first quarter. When the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, the Senators had a commanding 16-6 lead. However, the Broncos of Fayetteville State were determined to make it a game. With 6:26 left to play in the 2
nd quarter, D&E still had a ten-point lead. The Broncos would outscore the Senators 12-5 to close out the half and cut D&E's lead to just three points.
The game would go back and forth for the remaining two quarters. D&E still had the three-point lead heading into the media timeout in the third, but Fayetteville State would tie the game at 44 at the end of the third. At this point, if you were following along hopefully you didn't cut your nails because you would have been biting them off.
Coming out of the break between quarters,
Allie Taylor would set the tone for the Senators by hitting a big three to open the scoring in the 4
th. Keayna McLaughlin would even the game back up on the next possession for the Broncos. Davis & Elkins would stretch the lead to five points at the 5:49 mark and that would be the largest lead for the remainder of the game. The Senators would not score again until the 2:06 mark. This would end a 6-0 run for Fayetteville State and give D&E a one-point lead.
Peyton Mohler would make the and one free throw extending the lead to two. The Senators would not give up the lead again and hold out for their second victory in a row.
Dream Cherry would lead all scorers with 17 points.
Marissa Berlin and
Peyton Mohler would both have double-doubles. Berlin with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Mohler with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Allie Taylor had a huge second half for the Senators. Taylor finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds, after heading into half-time with only 4 points and 2 rebounds.
Davis & Elkins will play again at home and look to continue this winning streak when they faceoff against WV State on Wednesday, January 5
th at 5:30pm.
