FROSTBURG, Md. — Davis & Elkins sophomore goalkeeper
Marissa Cuevas set a new single-game program record with 24 saves in a 14-7 loss to Frostburg State on Thursday night.
Cuevas set the new record for D&E (3-2) early in the second half, breaking the previous single-game save mark of 20 set by
Ebele De La Bay Coffie against Lake Erie in 2018.
Hanna Bond,
Courtnie Couch and
Emily Smith had two goals each. Bond added four draw controls and Smith posted three caused turnovers. Frostburg State (5-3) held a 44-26 edge in shots and the Bobcats also held a 24-14 edge in ground balls.
Both goalkeepers shined in the early going for Frostburg State and Davis & Elkins, making several stops in a low-scoring first half. Cuevas continued her strong play throughout the opening 30 minutes, keeping the Senators deficit to within three goals at the break.
Cuevas turned aside 17 Frostburg State opportunities in the first half as D&E struggled to keep any sustained possession. The Bobcats held a 27-13 margin in shots during the first half.
Despite the strong play in between the pipes, Frostburg State opened up a 2-0 lead. The Senators got on the scoreboard following a slick move from Couch at 19:11 before
Angelina Horan sliced in to tie the score at two.
FSU added the next two tallies before until Couch responded, slicing the deficit to 4-3. Smith posted the first goal for D&E in the second half, turning to slot one onto the low corner off a feed from Couch, cutting the Frostburg lead to 6-4 at 26:11.
The Bobcats stretched their lead to 8-4 after killing off a yellow card before Smith responded with a goal at 21:01. Bond worked into position for a goal, trimming the deficit to just three at 9-6 with 18 minutes left.
Frostburg rattled off a three-goal spurt to pull ahead 12-6 with just under 13 minutes left. Bond ended the scoreless stretch for the Senators, peeling around the right side and placing one low at 12:02 to make it 12-7.
Stephanie King and Lilly Stephens had four goals each for Frostburg, while goalie Whitney Crosby made 10 saves.
Davis & Elkins returns home to face West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, April 11 at 2:00 PM.
