ELKINS, W.Va. -- Playing in a pair of competitive contests with Notre Dame (Ohio), Davis & Elkins softball collected a 6-4 walk-off win in the eighth inning during a doubleheader split with the Falcons on Monday afternoon.
Kailynn Parks went 5-for-7 (.714) between the two games for Davis & Elkins (7-5) as
Morgan Tandarich and
Lilly Saucedo recorded two hits apiece.
Jenna Evans combined for 10 strikeouts with
Haley Grindstaff pumping in nine more punchouts in the circle.
GAME ONE
Notre Dame (7-9) cracked the go-ahead home run in the seventh inning of game one in a 4-3 victory to begin the day.
The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 edge after four before the Senators chased NDC starter Taylor Olson.
Honesty Holt walked with the bases loaded to bring home the first run of the afternoon before D&E manufactured two more runs to tie the score, coming off a
Maddie Lavelle single and a fielder's choice.
Evans mowed through the NDC lineup in relief by sending down seven in a row, recording sox outs by strikeout. Alexi Maciejowski smacked a pitch in the zone out to deep to left for the game-winning homer as NDC took a 4-3 edge.
GAME TWO
Evans provided another relief appearance for Grindstaff in the circle, picking up the win in game two with 4.0 innings. Parks posted one of her four hits in the bottom of the eighth, ripping a single through the left side to plate Tandarich for the walk-off win.
Tandarich helped deliver the game-tying run just two batters prior with a single to left that was misplayed, scoring pinch-runner
Elyse Enriquez.
D&E opened the scoring in its first trip to the plate, pushing across three runs in the first, started with consecutive doubles from Holt and Grindstaff for a 3-0 lead. Parks laced a double in the second, plating
Sharon Morales for a 4-0 edge.
After four clean innings for D&E, the visiting Falcons broke through in the fifth to tie the game at four. The Falcons plated the gpo-ahead run in the eighth before the Senators answered with the tying and winning runs in their half of the frame.
NOTABLE
- Grindstaff and Evans split time in the circle, racking up a combined 19 strikeouts between the duo in the doubleheader.
- Zigmont tossed a combined 170 pitches between the two games in relief for NDC.
- Grindstaff earned MEC Softball Player of the Week honors as the doubleheader was taking place.
- Parks, who notched the first four-hit game of her college career, now leads the team with a .405 batting average. She is hitting .467 with runners on in 12 games.
- Holt has reached base safely in six consecutive games for D&E.
