Softball Falters at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins softball came up short in a road doubleheader at Glenville State, dropping game one by a 3-1 margin before losing game two in walk-off fashion by a 6-5 count on Friday afternoon at the Sue Morris Sports Complex.
 
Kirsten Malloy launched a solo home run in the opening contest, while Sharon Morales and Morgan Tandarich collected a pair of hits each for Davis & Elkins in game two.
 
THE RUNDOWN: GAME ONE
  • Final Score: Glenville State 3, Davis & Elkins 1

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE
  • Glenville State opened up a 2-0 lead through the third inning. Malloy got the Senators on the board with her solo blast in the fourth, trimming the deficit to 2-1.
  • The Pioneers added an insurance tally in the sixth on a run-scoring double, pushing the lead to 3-1.
  • Haley Grindstaff went the distance in the circle, allowing seven hits and three runs on five walks.
 
THE RUNDOWN: GAME TWO
  • Final Score: Glenville State 6, Davis & Elkins 5
  • Records: Davis & Elkins (11-19) | Glenville State (10-29)

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO
  • The Pioneers rallied with four runs in the seventh to complete the comeback with a walk-off victory.
  • After a pair of scoreless frames on both sides, Davis & Elkins broke through for a run in the third. Tandarich walked, eventually swiping second base, before zooming home on a two-out double from Parks for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Senators continued pulling ahead with three runs in the fifth for a 4-0 advantage. Morales led off the frame with an infield single, moving up on a wild pitch. Consecutive walks for Tandarich and Malloy loaded the bases.
  • Parks delivered with a single, scoring Morales, before Saucedo plated another run with a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead. Holt capped the inning with a single to right, pushing the lead to 4-0 as Malloy crossed home.
  • Morales smacked a one-out triple in the sixth and Ava Willis added a one-out single for a 5-0 lead.
  • The Pioneers chipped away with two runs in the sixth before scoring four runs in its final trip to the plate in the seventh.  
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Kaylee Drake scattered four hits to D&E in game one, finishing the complete-game effort with seven strikeouts.
  • All six of the Glenville State runs in game two came in the final two innings.
  • Jenna Evans tossed 6.2 innings for the Senators in game two.
  • Grindstaff pushed her hitting streak to a six consecutive games.
