Softball Splits With Charleston as Senators Cap Home Slate on Senior Day

ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball bounced back for a 5-2 win in game two against Charleston (W.Va.) in the home finale on Senior Day at Joni Smith Field. 

Morgan Tandarich was recognized postgame in a ceremony on the field for Davis & Elkins (11-17), which answered back from a 12-1 loss in five innings to start the day. 

THE RUNDOWN: GAME ONE 
  • Final Score: Charleston (W.Va.) 12, Davis & Elkins 1 (5 Innings) 
  • Records: Davis & Elkins (10-17) | Charleston (27-8, 20-5 MEC)
  • Location: Joni Smith Field - Elkins, W.Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE 
  • UC opened up an early 2-0 advantage, working a patient approach at the plate for the early lead. Honesty Holt grounded out, pushing a run across in the second, slicing the D&E deficit to 2-1. 
  • Danielle Bauer carried the Golden Eagles in the circle from there, allowing just three hits to the Senators in the opening game, with four punchouts. 
  • The Golden Eagles added three runs in the fourth off a home run before blowing the game open with seven runs in the fifth. 
  • Haley Grindstaff tossed four innings in the circle before Christina Kosier and Ava Willis came on in relief for the final inning. 

THE RUNDOWN: GAME TWO 
  • Final Score: Davis & Elkins 5, Charleston 2 
  • Records: Davis & Elkins (11-17) | Charleston (27-9, 20-6 MEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO 
  • Davis & Elkins jumped out to the early lead in game two with three runs in the first inning, providing some run support for Jenna Evans in the circle. With one out, Kailynn Parks took first after getting plunked, moving to third on a double laced to left-center by Lilly Saucedo
  • Honesty Holt smacked the 3-2 pitch off the wall in left, scoring Parks and Saucedo for the early 2-0 advantage. Holt eventually crossed home after tagging from third on a sacrifice fly from Maddie Lavelle
  • Evans locked in for the Senators, not allowing a hit through the first four innings. The sophomore hurler worked out of a second-inning jam, notching three consecutive outs with runners on second and third. 
  • Parks cracked a double to center in the third, alertly moving to third on an errant throw, before scoring on a groundout from Saucedo for a 4-0 lead. 
  • UC broke through for a pair of runs in the fifth, trailing 4-2. Lavelle added some insurance, getting all of a 1-2 pitch and driving it to deep center for a 5-2 lead in the sixth. 
  • From there, Evans induced a pair of lineouts before sealing the game with a strikeout. 

NEWS AND NOTES 
  • Saucedo and Lavelle posted two knocks each for D&E in game two. 
  • Lavelle launched her sixth homer of the season in game two, tied for the team lead. 
  • Parks extended her hitting streak to eight consecutive games out of the number two spot in the lineup. 
  • Evans has fired five or more strikeouts for the 11th time this season, totaling 94 on the year. 

UP NEXT 
  • Davis & Elkins: The Senators finish out the regular season with consecutive road doubleheaders, beginning Friday, April 30 at Glenville State at 1:00 PM.
