ELKINS, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins softball dropped a pair to West Virginia State in doubleheader action, falling 2-1 and 9-0, on Friday at a crisp Joni Smith Field on Friday.
The Senators fall to 10-16 overall as WVWC moved to 23-9 overall.
Scoring was tough to come by in game one until
Haley Grindstaff plated
Kailynn Parks with a fourth-inning single back up the middle for a 1-0 lead. WVSU responded with runs in the fifth and sixth to move ahead 2-1.
Grindstaff went the distance in the circle, allowing just two runs on five hits. Parks and Grinstaff posted two knocks each in the opening game.
The Yellow Jackets struck early in game two and continued pouring it on, jumping ahead 6-0 after three. Two home runs and a run-scoring double from Kasey Murphy provided much of the WVSU offense, while Murphy cruised to a shutout in the circle with six punchouts.
Kristen Malloy had two hits for the Senators in game two, while
Christina Kosier entered for the final two outs in the run-rule game.
Davis & Elkins finishes the home portion of the schedule on Monday, April 26 against Charleston (W.Va.) with first pitch set for 1:00 PM.
