D&E Women Drop See-Saw Affair at Alderson Broaddus

PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins women's lacrosse dropped a back-and-forth 12-10 road matchup against Alderson Broaddus on Thursday night.

Ahead 8-6 at the break, Davis & Elkins surrendered six unanswered goals in the second half. Emily Smith collected a game-high five goals and Angelina Horan chipped in three goals of her own with two assists.

Marissa Cuevas made 15 saves with AB holding a 34-26 edge in shots. Paige Graff had four ground balls and two caused turnovers for D&E.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Alderson Broaddus 12, Davis & Elkins 10
  • Records: Davis & Elkins (5-4) | Alderson Broaddus (4-6)
  • Location: Multi-Sport Performance Stadium - Philippi, W.Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both goalies made early stops on free-position chances to keep the game scoreless. Alderson Broaddus eventually opened the scoring nearly four minutes in before Davis & Elkins posted consecutive goals from Smith and Courtnie Couch for a 2-1 lead.
  • The Battlers answered back with the next two tallies for a 3-2 lead with 19:37 showing on the first half clock.
  • D&E used a four-goal spurt, receiving markers from Hanna Bond, Horan and two more from Smith for a 6-3 edge. Smith added a helper on the Horan goal, coming at 5:55 in the opening half.
  • The Battlers sliced into the lead just before the intermission, trimming the margin to 6-4 on a goal with 12 seconds remaining.
  • Each side traded goals throughout the first several minutes of the second half, with two more markers from the stick of Smith, allowing D&E to stay ahead at 8-6. The Battlers did not go away, however, striking back with 24:12 remaining and cutting the deficit to just 8-7.
  • AB notched the game-tying shot at the 22:45 mark as part of a six-goal swing, before moving ahead on a Terri Nashe attempt for the 9-8 lead as D&E called timeout.
  • Cuevas turned aside a shot at 21:05 off a free position before the Senators racked down the field for the clear. Haley Leavines uncorked one high before the Battlers labeled an attempt of their own high of the target from close range.
  • Couch weaved through traffic and placed a shot on target that Taylor Young gobbled up at 16:29. D&E struggled to maintain possession on a sustained basis for several minutes, but Cuevas made some timely stops, allowing the visitors to stay within striking distance.
  • Horan dodged right, ringing one low off the post as the scoring drought continued for the Senators. After an AB attempt whizzed wide, Nashe pushed the advantage to 10-8 with a goal at the 7:30 mark of the second half.
  • Horan showed patience along the left side near the crease before darting into the middle for a much-needed D&E goal with 6:30 left, bringing the Senators to within 11-9.
  • Young stopped two attempts from the Senators in short order, able to jumpstart a clear with just over five minutes left. Horan worked free again in response to an AB goal as the Senators trailed 12-10. The Senators had a few more chances, but could not solve Young as AB melted away the clock down the stretch.
