WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins softball dropped a road doubleheader by identical 2-0 scores on Saturday afternoon against West Liberty.
Davis & Elkins (7-13) mustered seven hits on the day and received a pair of strong outings in the circle from
Jenna Evans and
Haley Grindstaff.
West Liberty (21-9) pushed its winning streak to 12 consecutive games with the sweep.
Evans went the distance in game one, collecting six strikeouts to keep the Senators within striking distance throughout. The Hilltoppers struck first, crossing home on a throwing error for a 1-0 lead, before doubling the margin to 2-0 on a fifth inning double.
The Senators threatened in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff single for
Maddie Lavelle.
Elyse Enriquez, who entered to pinch run, zipped to second on a sacrifice bunt. The Senators could not bring the run home as WLU starter Makenzie Amend worked out of the jam.
Grindstaff logged the complete game in the nightcap, scattering four hits with five punchouts. The Hilltoppers plated single runs in the fourth and fifth to jump ahead 2-0.
Davis & Elkins softball finishes the weekend with a road doubleheader at Wheeling on Sunday, April 18. First pitch is set for noon.
